GET LIT UP!

Tony and I decided that we needed to show off our prognostication skillz to all of you, so here's our new blog feature: picking which pitcher will GET LIT UP during the week in the Hardcore League.

First and foremost, the inspiration (16 second mark):

So let's get to the rules, which are very simple. If a pitcher gets lit up, we get a check mark and you shower us with praise. We think that if a starter ends his outing with an ERA of 6 or higher, that's pretty much getting lit up. As Tony said, "If his stats make you say 'Fuck!'...he got lit up."

Here goes:

Shaun

1) Phil Hughes, Tuesday @ Orioles (No real reason...the O's are due to do something)

2) Cliff Lee, Friday vs. Rangers (First start back, I don't like it)

3) Yovanni Gallardo, Saturday @ Padres (Sorry to pick on Big Head for 2/3 of my picks, but the Fathers have been quietly good at home)

Bullpen Arsonist - Kevin Gregg (You'd think this would be a lay-up, but Gregg's been pretty good lately. Tick tick tick tick. BOOM.)

*Tony is too busy in the cages this week, but he'll be here next week.

Last Week in Hardcore - Week 2

(I betcha thought we forgot... oh, no, we, di'n't!)

Let's get right to it, shall we?

Hardcore Game of the Week
3rd Place James Madison Gang over 1st Place Miami Fart Machine in the Battle of the Bad Offenses

Miami Fart Machine ran out of gas this week after great Week 1 start on the year, as the James Madison Gang emerged victorious, 8-4. Conor Jackson was the only Gang member to hit over .300 for the week, although pitching was strong with Jonathan Sanchez throwing 8 shutout innings with 11 K's for a win, and Mariano Rivera getting 3 saves with a 0.00 ERA. The Gang dominated the pitching categories this week, with 75 K, 5 saves, 1 hold, a 2.274 ERA and a 1.147 WHIP, losing the wins category by only one game, 6-5.

Offensively, the Fart Machine scored 46 runs to Madison's 26, and 11 homeruns to only 4 - but the Gang was able to squeak by with slightly higher numbers in RBI, stolen bases and batting average. The Machine's Dustin Pedroia hit .375 with 2 HR and 6 RBI, but Carlos Lee went 2 for 25 with only 1 run scored. On the mound, Roy Oswalt and David Huff pitched well for wins, but Aaron Harang proved that he's the worst by allowing 8 runs on 10 hits in just 4 innings.

Beatdown of the Week
Lousy Street Weasels over Thunder Guts - 8-3-1

The Street Weasels pulled out this week's beatdown over Thunder Guts, whose only bright spots were home runs (15), RBI (55) and batting average (.270).
Shin-Shoo Choo hit .579 with 3 home runs, 11 RBI, 5 runs and 1 steal. Nelson Cruz hit 3 home runs for the Guts but only managed a .190 average. Roy Halladay continued his dominance, going 8 innings and allowing only 2 runs for a victory.

The Weasels scored 55 runs and notched 12 stolen bases offensively. In pitching, they dominated with 65 K, 7 wins, 4 saves, a 3.209 ERA and 1.156 OBP. Manny Ramirez remained a powerhouse, with a .462 avg., 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 4 runs and a .556 OBP. Denard Span also had a strong showing this week, hitting .381 with 8 runs and 3 steals. In pitching, Matt Garza walked away with 2 wins, 10 K's, a 0.56 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Jaime Garcia pitched 7 innings with 1 hit and no runs. Closer David Aardsma had 3 saves on the week.

2 Piece and a Biscuit Stuffs Channel 4 News Team
7-4-1

Once again, the chicken and biscuit are the big winners this week, with tasty showings in RBI (44), stolen bases (16), batting average (.2875), OBP (.3733), K's (84) and holds (6).
Joey Votto and Juan Pierre each had 4 steals, followed by Ben Zobrist and Scott Podsednik with 3 each. Podsednik also hit .542 for the week. Derek Jeter hit .500 with 4 home runs and 7 RBI. On the mound, Adam Wainwright brought home 2 wins, with 17 K's in 16 innings, allowing only 2 runs.

The News Team dropped the ball in those categories but won runs 54-39, home runs 11-7, wins 5-4 and ERA 3.176 vs. 3.440. Bright spots were Andre Ethier, who hit .423 with 3 HR and 9 RBI; Andrew McCutchen with 5 stolen bases and Robinson Cano with 2 home runs. Andy Pettite was able to earn two wins defensively, along with Matt Guerrier's 2 holds.

Champ Takes Downturn on Death Ro, Ends Week with a 7-5 loss

Runs (52), RBI (60), stolen bases (9), avg. (.2708) and OBP (.3648) were the only highlights for The Champ is Here in a matchup with The Death Ro, who dominated in pitching stats.

Ro took every pitching category - 58 strikeouts, 5 wins, 4 saves, 2 holds, a 4.005 ERA and 1.292 WHIP - along with home runs (12), to become the only victorious team to take the home runs category this week. Matt Kemp hit 4 of them, with an average of .333, 8 RBI and 8 runs. Carlos Pena went long 3 times and batted in 9. Casey McGehee hit 2 home runs with a .455 average. Although Rafael Soriano earned 3 saves, Jair Jurrgens got blowed up - allowing 11 runs in 11 innings.

The Champ is Here only took 1 pitching victory all week. Gavin Floyd bombed, pitching 7 innings with 11 earned runs. Offensively, the team fared better, with Adam Lind hitting .357 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI, and Michael Cuddyer hitting .368 with 8 RBI.

Viagra Falls Snake Charmers deadlock Uncle Teddy and the Revolution

6-6

If home runs didn't help anyone but the Death Ro this week in a quest for the win, it at least helped Uncle Teddy avoid a loss in favor of a tie.

The Revolution's strong points this week included 56 runs, 14 home runs, 43 RBI, 13 stolen bases, 7 saves and 2 holds. Ryan Braun hit .423 with 2 home runs, 8 RBI and 1 steal. Chase Utley hit .333 with 5 home runs and 8 RBI. Brett Gardener hit .385 with 4 steals. Ubaldo Jimenez was the shining star on the team - throwing the week's only no-hitter, with 6 walks and 7 K's. Jon Rauch, Octavio Dotel and Ryan Madsen each earned 2 saves.

Viagra Falls was able to keep control on a .2953 batting average, .3519 OBP, 68 K's, 5 wins, a 2.591 ERA and 1.091 WHIP, but not able to stave off the Revolution completely. Dan Uggla hit .464 with 11 RBI and B.J. Upton hit .316 with 3 home runs. On the mound, Josh Johnson earned a win in 6 innings with 10 K's. Fernando Rodney and Matt Capps each got two saves on the week.

Last Week in Hardcore - Week 1

Some things never change, but Miami Fart Machine starting the season strong is one that has.

Last season's ninth place finisher grabbed the one slot early this season, trouncing The Champ is Here in runs, home runs, RBI and strikeouts and finishing the week 8-2-2.

Uncle Teddy and the Revolution, league champion for two years running, continues to look strong, defeating Thunder Guts 7-4-1 in week one.

Hardcore Game of the Week
Uncle Teddy Cures Thunder Guts, 7-4-1

Everyone started on the same page this week, and for these two teams, offense was the name of the game.

For Uncle Teddy, the surprise offensive leader was Paul Konerko, who went deep not once, not twice, but three times this week, driving in a total of 7 runs with a .440 OBP. Big time free agent acquisition Chase Utley also proved his worth (the millions spent on his contract), accounting for 6 runs, 4 RBI, and reaching base at an astounding .500 clip with 8 hits and 7 walks. Rajai Davis chipped in with 4 stolen bases and 7 runs scored, providing the winning margin in the stolen base category that The Revolution needed. As a whole, the offense was extremely consistent, with an amazing 10 batters reaching the .300 batting average mark, providing for a .313 team average for the week. While the offense reached for great heights this week, the pitching was another story entirely. With a pair of unexpected disappointing outings each from Justin Verlander and Chris Carpenter, owner Shaun Kennedy can't be too thrilled with their performances. What he can be happy with, however, is the performance of Ubaldo Jimenez, who notched a pair of wins, 13 strikeouts and a nice 2.25 ERA in two starts. Jon Rauch, a closer who wasn't expected to fill that position coming into spring training, added some great value with 4 saves on the week.

Thunder Guts almost matched The Revolution stroke for stroke offensively, but despite the big time numbers the team put up, they weren't quite enough to pull out a victory. Albert Pujols, Nelson Cruz and Vernon Wells lead the team offensively with 4 home runs each. Second baseman Brian Roberts turned in a disappointing performance before getting hurt and being placed on the 15-day disabled list. Roy Halladay paced the pitching staff with 2 wins, 17 strikeouts and only 2 walks, with a sparkling 0.56 ERA. Better luck next week.

Beatdown of the Week
Miami Fart Machine Gasses The Champ is Here, 8-2-2

The Fart Machine was lead offensively by Dustin Pedroia, who hit for a .360 average with 3 home runs, 7 RBI and 6 runs. Jorge Cantu delivered 10 RBI and Garrett Jones added 3 homers with a stolen base in the effort. In pitching, Jorge De la Rosa allowed only 1 hit in 7 innings with 9 strikeouts. Carlos Marmol earned 2 saves without allowing a single run.

On the opposite side of the field, Aramis Ramirez was more a chump than a Champ, hitting for an average of only .130 on the week. Pitchers Josh Beckett and Derek Lowe each got blowed up with 6.17 and 4.5 ERAs respectively. In addition, Lowe sent 10 men to base on walks. On the bright side, Placido Polanco played well, hitting a .455 average on the week. Adrian Gonzalez also added 2 home runs in the losing effort.

Special Report: Channel 4 News Team Deadlocks the Lousy Street Weasels
Week ends in tie, 6-6-0

Channel 4 had the upper hand on the offensive categories this week, with resounding victories in runs, home runs, stolen bases and batting average. Headliners for the team included Magglio Ordonez, who hit .462 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI; Curtis Granderson, who hit .348 with 2 homers, 4 RBI and 3 stolen bases, and Martin Prado, who lead the team in batting average with .542 and 5 runs scored.

The Street Weasels, on the other hand, dominated on the mound with leaders like Tim Lincecum, who finished with 2 wins, 17 strikeouts and only 1 walk to top off a 1.29 ERA; Matt Garza, who threw 8 innings for a win with 9 strikeouts and only 1 run allowed, and rookie Jaime Garcia, who pitched well for a win. Rookie phenom Jason Heyward lead the team offensively with a .292 average, 3 home runs and 8 RBI.

James Madison Gang Eats 2 Piece and a Biscuit for Lunch
8-4-0

James Madison Gang's Chris "Black" Young hit 3 home runs and drove in 11, while Miguel Cabrera hit .522 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI. Jimmy Rollins was all over the bases with a .516 OBP and 8 runs scored with 2 steals to top off the week. One pitching leader was Shaun Marcum, who had 11 strikeouts in 13 innings. Jeremy Affeldt and Mark Buehrle also finished strong, taking home 2 wins each - but it wasn't all good. Closer Frank Francisco's performance was abysmal, with 2 blown saves, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in only 2 innings. Owner Tony Pellegrino took some solace in the fact that Francisco was, however, able to earn a win over the weekend once he was removed from the closer's role.

2 Piece's offense, for the most part, fell flat last week, led by Mark Texiera and Juan Pierre, who both went 3-for-24 with .125 batting averages. The lone bright spots were Ryan Howard, who hit .357 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI, and unbelievably, Scott Podsednik, who hit .364 with 4 stolen bases. On the mound, Chris Perez and Jonathan Papelbon earned two saves each, but were otherwise roughed up - with 9.00 and 5.40 ERAs respectively. Adam Wainwright looked strong in his one start, earning a victory for the Biscuit, and reliever Ryan Perry added a save and 2 holds on the week.

Viagra Falls Snake Charmers Unable to Escape The Death Ro
Ro takes week 8-3-1

The Death Ro killed last week in runs, home runs, RBI, batting average, ERA and WHIP. Offensive leaders were Hideki Matsui with a .370 average, 2 home runs and 5 RBI, Casey McGehee, who hit .348 with 2 homers and 4 RBI, and Matt Kemp, who hit .321 with one homer, 7 RBI and a stolen base. Julio Borbon may be in danger of walking the Green Mile after his 0-for-16 start to the season. Jered Weaver led the team's pitching effort with one victory in two starts, with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings and a 1.00 WHIP. Brian Wilson and Heath Bell added 2 saves a piece. Todd Coffey had two holds.

Matt Holliday was the only Charmer to live up to his team's name - he hit .423 with 3 home runs, 6 RBI, 8 runs scored and a steal. Eleven guys on the team hit .208 or worse on the week. Reliever Leo Nunez got a win and two saves, while Carlos Zambrano proved to be his usual unpredictable self, throwing one good game and one not-so-good game last week.

Offensive Stars
1. Albert Pujols - .375 avg. | 4 hr | 10 RBI | 7 runs scored | .444 OBP 2. Nelson Cruz - .450 avg | 4 hr | 9 RBI | 6 runs scored | .520 OBP 3. Dustin Pedroia - .360 avg. | 3 hr | 7 RBI | 6 runs scored | .433 OBP

Pitching Stars
1. Roy Halladay - 2 wins | 16 IP | 17:2 K:BB | 0.56 ERA | 0.94 WHIP 2. Tim Lincecum - 2 wins | 14 IP | 17:1 K:BB | 1.29 ERA | 0.71 WHIP 3. Jorge De la Rosa - 1 win | 7 IP | 9:1 K:BB | 0.00 ERA | 0.29 WHIP
